Worm Orientation

Most Cleveland Worm Gear Reducers can easily be changed from standard Right Hand to Left Hand (or vise versa) by following five simple steps.  The few gearbox sizes which require special procedures are listed below:  Styles WTCHS and UCHS in sizes 80 and 100, with 1-1/8" bores; and WTCHS/UCHS size 60, 10:1 and 15:1 ratios.  On these models, the worm gear must be removed before reversing the worm.  Remove the output shaft cover, the output shaft, and the worm wheel affixed to it.

For all other unit styles follow one of these links:

Items Required:

Photo of Tools Needed

Soft Hammer

Snap Ring Pliers

Metric Allen Wrench (Chart of sizes)

Shims and gaskets should be on hand in case of need.

General Notes:

Never use a hard hammer!  Always use a soft hammer for driving components.  All Hampton bearings are pressed against stepped seats machined on input shafts, so driving the shaft with a soft hammer will remove the outer races without moving or damaging the rest of the bearing.

Avoid dropping worms and gears.

Place all components on a soft work surface to avoid nicks or burrs which can shorten life.

Tighten high speed cover cap screws in an alternating pattern to properly preload bearings.

Double reduction units.  Consult Hampton for information on reversing
